Frequently asked questions
The difference between the non-profit and the fund
The non-profit Hippo and Friends has existed since 2019 so that we can work across the whole of Belgium, alongside the Hippo & Friends type 1 diabetesfonds that has been active at KU Leuven since 2013.
Through the fund at KU Leuven we can support research into type 1 diabetes and issue tax certificates for gifts.
The non-profit Hippo and Friends makes it easier to work throughout Belgium, to roll out awareness campaigns and to organise events that draw attention to type 1 diabetes. Although the fund and the non-profit work together towards the same goal, the non-profit offers more operational scope while the fund provides financial resources for research.
Making a gift
You can make a gift to our research fund at KU Leuven, the Hippo & Friends type 1 diabetesfonds. From 40 euros a year onwards you are entitled to a tax certificate, which is sent out in March of the year following your gift.

That is possible. You decide on a fixed moment (monthly, for example) and a fixed amount to support us through a standing order. You can adjust or stop your order at any time. In spring you automatically receive a tax certificate for the total amount of all your gifts over the past year. From € 40 a year onwards, your gift is tax deductible. You can spread your gift across the whole year without having to remember to renew it.
Download the document for a standing payment order below. You can hand it in completed at your bank. You can of course also set up a standing order digitally straight away via your bank's website or app. Details for supporting the Hippo & Friends type 1 diabetesfonds specifically:

Sponsorship
Strong partners make all the difference in allowing us to continue our work and realise our projects. Feel free to contact us by e-mail or by phone to discuss the possibilities. Every year we draw up a detailed sponsorship file setting out all the projects we hope to realise with the support of strong partners.
If you support a specific project, your sponsorship goes towards carrying out the project you have chosen. Every project fits within one or more of our objectives:
- Raising more awareness of type 1 diabetes
- Improving quality of life through our sport and exercise projects diaT1op and diaT1op kids
- Supporting scientific research. If we have not spent all the resources on the chosen project, the remaining amount goes towards supporting scientific research into type 1 diabetes.
You can also sponsor us in general, in which case the board of the non-profit Hippo and Friends decides how the funds are allocated.
With sponsorship you receive something in return from us, such as visibility for your name and/or logo on our website. A gift, on the other hand, is given without expecting anything in return (apart from a tax certificate from 40 euros a year onwards).
Additional returns, such as your name and/or logo on printed material or an information stand at an event, are always set out for each project in our sponsorship file. Because you receive something in return, sponsorship falls under VAT legislation.
Wills and legacies
Thank you for your interest! We are happy to send you the information you need and to discuss your intention with you in complete confidence if you wish. Feel free to contact us at info@hippoandfriends.be. You can also visit the 'testament' page on our website.
We are also a member of testament.be, which means a lawyer can give you free advice in complete confidence. You can request an information guide on legacies free of charge by e-mail at info@hippoandfriends.be.
If you draw up a will in favour of Hippo and Friends, you need to state the following details:
- Our full name: vzw Hippo and Friends
- Our legal form: non-profit association
- Our company number: BE0728.817.319
- Our registered office: Herestraat 49 bus 902, 3000 Leuven
More and more people prefer to support a good cause when a loved one dies instead of receiving flowers or wreaths. When someone passes away, it can be a great comfort if the deceased lives on through support for the cause that was dear to them.
If you would like to mention Hippo and Friends in a death notice to invite family and friends to make a gift, please always contact us at info@hippoandfriends.be or at steun@kuleuven.be. We will send you a unique reference, which allows us to provide you with a general overview of the gifts (names of the donors and the total amount, no individual amounts). The principle that a gift of 40 euros or more entitles you to a tax certificate applies here too.
You leave your estate, in whole or in part, to a good cause so that it can continue its fight after your death. You of course decide yourself which assets you wish to leave, and you contact the organisation or your notary to include it in your will. Good causes benefit from lower inheritance tax on the legacies they receive.
There are generally two forms of will: the authentic or notarial will, drawn up by your notary in the presence of witnesses, and the handwritten will, which you write by hand and sign yourself. For a handwritten will the involvement of a notary is in principle not required, but we do advise you to have the content of your will checked by a lawyer or notary, who will make sure the wording used is clear and correct.
The law determines who the heirs are and to what degree: the surviving spouse, the children, the grandchildren, the brothers and sisters, the uncles, aunts or cousins. If there are no legal heirs and you have not made a will, your property goes to the state.
diaT1op
DiaT1op was set up in 2015 as a research project by prof. dr. Pieter Gillard, an endocrinologist at UZ Leuven. Continuous glucose monitoring was still in its infancy at the time and sport was not easy for people with type 1 diabetes. Because of the many obstacles, intensive exercise was even discouraged. By bringing together a group of around twenty cyclists who trained alongside doctors, diabetes educators and dietitians, a great deal of knowledge and experience was built up. Later that year everyone succeeded in climbing the Stelvio in Italy, with great success!
At the end of each sporting year, participants feel healthier, more active and more confident about managing their diabetes while exercising. Since 2021 diaT1op has been an important part of the non-profit Hippo and Friends, where we focus strongly on offering education and sporting challenges (walking, running and cycling) in a safe environment. diaT1op has existed for more than 10 years and continues to promote safe exercise with type 1 diabetes. For more information, visit www.diaT1op.be.
You can find more information on the website www.diaT1op.be.
Actions and campaigns
We are delighted that you would like to set up an action in support of Hippo and Friends. There are various options that we are happy to go through with you. We have a fundraising platform on our website (support without a tax certificate) and a crowdfunding platform run by KU Leuven (with a tax certificate). Which platform suits you depends on your action, and you may not need one at all.
Contact us at info@hippoandfriends.be to discuss the possibilities; we are happy to think along with you about how to work it out.
If you start an action yourself and want to support a particular project, such as scientific research, you can let us know. We will make sure the funds end up in the right place. If it makes no difference to you, the board of the non-profit Hippo and Friends decides how the funds are allocated.
During our awareness campaigns we also try to raise some extra funds. For every campaign we always state where the funds will go.
Don't worry, we are happy to think along with you. Contact us without obligation by e-mail or by phone and we will arrange a conversation.
