Am I like Hippo? A brochure about screening for type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes does not appear overnight. The disease process often begins months or years before the first symptoms show. Screening makes it possible to detect type 1 diabetes early, before serious symptoms set in. Early detection saves lives, reduces hospital admissions and opens the door to taking part in research that may slow the condition down.
Screening means gaining time, reducing risks and starting from a stronger position.
'Ben ik zoals Hippo?' (Am I like Hippo?) is a brochure for the brothers and sisters of children with type 1 diabetes. It explains in accessible terms what type 1 diabetes is and why screening for the condition matters so much. Together with Hippo, his younger sister Nelli and his little brother Thor, you discover what screening is and what role the 'confused substance Y' plays in the development and detection of type 1 diabetes.
For more information about screening for you or your family, please contact your diabetes nurse or paediatric endocrinologist.
